Brady Announces Lake Conroe Fire Department Federal Firefighter Assistance Grant for 2008

Ensures Power to Department in Event of Emergency
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) announced today that the Lake Conroe Fire Department was awarded a $30,600 grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. These funds will go to the purchase of a standby generator for both stations to provide power during a Hurricane Rita type event or other power outage.
“I’m honored to congratulate the Lake Conroe Department on receiving this grant,” Brady said. “This grant ensures that our local heroes will have the resources they need to continually protect our communities and keep us safe.”
The purpose of the FY 2008 AFG is to award grants directly to fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. The funds can be used for training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.
“We are very happy to have finally received this grant.” Lake Conroe Fire Department Captain Terry Murphy said. “This funding will go a long way in creating a safe evacuation center for our citizens in the event of a hurricane or other emergency. The new generators will provide our firefighters the resources they need to continue to protect our citizens in the event of a blackout.”
In its third round of assistance, the AFG program will award approximately $500 million directly to fire departments and EMS organizations in fiscal year 2008 to enhance their response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel with respect to fire and all other hazards. Using a competitive process overseen by fire service subject matter experts, AFG grants are awarded to applicants whose requests best address the priorities of the AFG program.
